In 2018, at Spring Mills High School, Shepherd University student teacher Rachel Grizzle was accused of having inappropriate relations with a 13-year-old boy and a 16-year-old student of Spring Mills High School, where she was a student teacher. She was charged with third-degree sexual assault, soliciting a minor via computer, two counts of use of obscene matter and exhibiting material depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. At the time of the charges. Grizzle was student teaching at Tomahawk Intermediate School and neither Tomahawk or Spring Mills parents were notified of the alleged abuse or charges.

In 2015, Spring Mills High School science teacher Joshua Marsili was accused of soliciting two 16-year-old female students in a sexually explicit manner on social media last year. In 2017, he plead guilty to soliciting a minor via computer and received three years probation.

In 2019, parents of a child at Musselman Middle School met with Principal Jim Holland regarding sexual abuse of their daughter by a fellow student. She was fondled in class and sexually harassed and the principal shared all he could do was talk to the boy about the allegations. Since then, she has been bullied by the student and classmates.

In 2015, Musselman Middle School science teacher Melissa Hott was accused of sending nude photos to students. She was charged with distribution of sexually explicit material, solicitation of a minor via computer, use of obscene matter and exhibiting of material depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

In 2009, Musselman Middle School teacher, Stephanie Jo Walters, was charged and plead guilty to sexual abuse charge involving a 14-year-old student.

In 2016, Thomas Carroll, a school resource officer at Musselman High School and former Berkeley County Sheriff’s Department deputy was charged with sending a sexually explicit image with a teenage boy via social media with the intent of seducing him. He was sentenced to one year in jail and plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge.

In 2017, Hedgesville High School Latin teacher, Phillip Andrew Cruz was arraigned on a felony charge of sexual assault. He was placed on probation for five years and ordered to register for life as a sexual offender.

In 2014, Hedgesville High School teacher Erin Thomas was accused of having a sexual relationship with an underage student. He was convicted on one count of sexual abuse of by a person of trust and sentenced to 10-20 years of house arrest.

In 2014, an Eagle School Intermediate teacher, Keith Randy Kishbaugh, was charged with electronic solicitation of a 13 year old child. The fourth grade teacher was immediately put on leave without pay and the child was not a student of Berkeley County.

In 2000, a Martinsburg High School teacher began a relationship with a student. Following her graduation, they were married and both are currently employed by the Berkeley County School system.

Manny Arvon, who knowingly allowed a sex offender to come to school in costume, stated in November of 2018 that “Students must be assured that there will be consequences for anyone found to have harmed a student — anything less renders meaningless our responsibility to protect our students.”
