Pride of a Sister

Pride of a Sister

Before we became a special needs family, pride in our house trickled from parent to child. Three year old Amos, with autism and extra special needs, has inspired our whole crew to be better, work harder, act in sensitivity, be empathetic, practice thoughtfulness and most importantly, to count mosquito wings as they skirt our path. They do so very often too, bits of success and progress accounted for, especially in our youngest family member. It was his sister that acknowledged the ..

Sunbeam

Are all children with special needs considered a lovely bit of light by their mothers? Or perhaps, those with autism? I think maybe it's a bit of both, a person whose mind is wired creatively and maybe their chromosomes are just a bit unique. Sunbeam is defined as a beam of light from the sun that you can see. That you can see, that is my favorite part. Light is all around us, most all the time, but one can not articulate its' origin. No, it encompasses the world around us and enve ..

Amos & Swimming

Amos & Swimming

My name is Amos. Someone has signed me up for a week of swimming lessons. I may need to rethink this not taking a nap thing. I may rather be asleep than dunked in a cold pool. It's not an option, my mom said. She clearly didn't get the memo that I'm on vacation. Good grief. I can swim just fine. Well, almost. If I don't follow directions, it's not my fault. I mean, everyone speaks Spanish. Love, Amos ..

The Perfect Vacation

The Perfect Vacation

1. Inclusive resorts or Disney cruise. Yes, folks pointed out these options to me, but setting up a go fund me page seems a little bit tacky for entertainment respite reasons. 2. Travel with lots of families. Built in friends would mean my kids were outside without me and not arguing over their grandparent's one computer. 3. Me being lazy. I just want to be lazy. Like, sit by the pool, drink a coke, settle in and work on my book, watch Dateline, or take a shower and ..

A Boy's Love

A Boy's Love

I've got it. The love of one boy, at least. I've always been his lifeline, though it's a role I didn't particularly seek. To vie for the love of Amos has never been close to a competition I had pondered. My other children adored their mama too, but Daddy was always a close second, actually first with our daughter. My mother has always been my oldest son's favorite, but Amos? He's been mine from the start. When your boy has extra special needs, you grow fierce. Love that grows wings  ..

Amos & Swimming Lessons

My name is Amos. Me real tired. I did not like swimming lessons. Like, really did not like. All that Spanish and loud talking. It was just too much. It was scary too. I love the pool, but that pool was cold. My grandparents keep their pool at 84. My mom says one day of that was plenty. I'm glad we can take swimming lessons off our agenda. Shew. She said this special needs stuff is complicated. Hello? Me? Never. Love, Amos ..

Say No to Social Media for Your Tween

Say No to Social Media for Your Tween

I'm sure there are responsible kids out there and truthfully, I'd like to think there are a few living in my house, but I'm not taking any chances. I remember curiosity led me to the bad books hidden in the library, introduction to sex by Judy Blume. Truthfully, that was even a bit much for a twelve year old and so, I wonder about life in the day of this thing called social media. Not just social media, but the internet at large and I worry not just for the kids looking for illic ..

Amos & the T-Shirt

My name is Amos. My sissy finds my shirt very offensive. My mom claims it has spawned a lot of interesting conversation. Sissy says she's worth at least a hundred dollars. Little Thomas said $1500. Russell said he's not for sale. My mom said it would be difficult to put a price on me. She said we would all need a no return policy. That sounds not very nice. We are keepers. Love, Amos ..

Stop the Judging

I've had it. I've just had it. What is the world coming to and who are all these perfect parents? Come out, come out, wherever you are. I want to talk to you and I mean business. The latest incident beckoning the judgers was a terrible tragedy for a NC family visiting a restaurant in Atlanta. I don't know about you, but I want folks to know that NC protects our own, empathetic and loving always. This HB2 nonsense has given us enough of a bad rap and I'm unwilling to sit by and let us st ..

Laughter

Laughter

An unlikely place. My mind says shhh, but my heart says joy. Laughter, shoving, wrestling with a tacky pink blanket, a cool morning, three excited children, three sleepy adults. Easter isn't much of what I remember as a child, at least not all of it. I remember hunting Easter baskets as our children do and some years they were the tacky ones packaged in crinkly plastic, the ones I drooled over at Kmart and some years they were more pristine, eggs and candy and even a cabbage patch doll.  ..
