The Police Chief

I know this police chief, he used to be in a heavy metal rockband and is the type to look back at himself and laugh.

I know this police chief, he is the person that brought our dog home in the back of his police car before she learned to mind the friendly voice that says, "Go home, Clarke."

I know this police chief, he is as part of the community as any of us and in the era of distrusting law enforcement, our small NC town is idyllic.

I know this police chief, he always stops to speak and smile and push my Amos on the swings at the downtown playground bordering the Albemarle Sound.

I know this police chief, he is fair and kind and even tempered, one of the few souls you encounter that truly has no enemies.

I know this police chief, he moved here from my hometown of Rocky Mount and like me, considers Edenton home.

I know this police chief, he is quick to give a hug and steals my heart every time he sees my special needs son and says, "I want one of those."

I know this police chief, he goes by Chief, Jay, Chief Fortenberry and he knows the name of each person in our family of six.

I know this police chief, last night at our small town tree lighting he held Amos in his arms and happily shared his hot cocoa, and I thought to myself that all was right in the world.

Thank you, Chief.

I too know your Chief. As a prosecutor in your old home county for the past 29 years. I worked with him and know of what you speak. Thank you for bringing him and all those men and women in blue that DO the right things to the attention of others. Way to go Fortenberry, I am proud to know you!
